Canadian Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Canadian Division was formed after expansion in 1926. The division existed for 12 seasons until 1938. Despite its name, the division contained at least one team based in the United States throughout its existence. Its champion was awarded the O'Brien Trophy. During its run as a separate division, when considered as a whole the Canadian Division was the slightly less successful of the league's two divisions, winning five Stanley Cup championships compared with seven won by the American Division. Under the cross-over playoff format then in use, Canadian Division teams contested just one intra-divisional Finals, compared to three such series played by American Division teams. Notably however, Canadian teams won all twelve division titles and were the only teams from the division to reach the Finals during this time. 1927–28 New York Rangers Season
The 1927–28 New York Rangers season was the franchise's second season. In the regular season, the Rangers finished in second place in the American Division with a 19–16–9 record and qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs. In a pair of two-game total goals series, New York defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Bruins to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they faced the Montreal Maroons. The Rangers defeated the Maroons 3–2 to win their first Stanley Cup. 1927–28 NHL Season
The 1927–28 NHL season was the List of NHL seasons, 11th Season (sport), season of the National Hockey League. Ten teams played 44 games each. This was the first full season that the Toronto club used the Toronto Maple Leafs name following ownership changes in February 1927. The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup beating the Montreal Maroons, becoming the first NHL team based in the United States to win it. Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL)
The Pittsburgh Pirates were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL), based in Pittsburgh from 1925–26 to 1929–30. The nickname comes from the baseball team also based in the city. For the 1930–31 season, the team moved to Philadelphia, and played one season as the Philadelphia Quakers. History Early days The Pittsburgh Pirates are traced back to the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets of the United States Amateur Hockey Association. The Yellow Jackets, under manager Roy Schooley and coach Dick Carroll, won back-to-back USAHA championships in the league's last two seasons, 1923–24 and 1924–25. New York Americans
The New York Americans, colloquially known as the Amerks, were a professional ice hockey team based in New York City from 1925 to 1942. They were the third expansion team in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the second to play in the United States. The team never won the Stanley Cup, but reached the semifinals twice. While it was the first team in New York City, it was eclipsed by the second, the New York Rangers, which arrived in 1926 under the ownership of the Amerks' landlord, Madison Square Garden (1925), Madison Square Garden. The team played as the Brooklyn Americans during the 1941–42 NHL season, 1941–42 season before suspending operations in 1942 due to World War II and long-standing financial difficulties. The demise of the club marked the beginning of the NHL's Original Six era from 1942 to 1967, though the Amerks' franchise was not formally canceled until 1946. 1927–28 Detroit Cougars Season
The 1927–28 Detroit Cougars season was the second season of the Detroit, Michigan National Hockey League (NHL) franchise later known as the Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit Cougars scored 44 points, finishing fourth in the American Division and failing to make the playoffs in their sophomore year. The Cougars finally moved into what would be their home for the next fifty years, Detroit's Olympia Stadium. Their also received a new coach and general manager in Jack Adams. Adams made an immediate impact, picking up Reg Noble and quickly naming him Captain. 1927–28 Toronto Maple Leafs Season
The 1927–28 Toronto Maple Leafs season was the first under the Maple Leafs name for the Toronto National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. The club finished in fourth to miss the playoffs again. Offseason Conn Smythe left his duties as coach at the University of Toronto and became the general manager and coach of the Leafs. Smythe would be general manager for 30 years. Smythe put team captain Bert Corbeau on waivers in October. Corbeau cleared waivers and joined Toronto Ravinia of the Canadian-American Professional Hockey League. Smythe named Hap Day as team captain.
