1888–89 Preston North End F.C. Season
The 1888–89 Football League, 1888–89 season was Preston North End's first season in the Football League, which had just been founded. Because of this, Preston became one of the founder members of the Football League. Preston were very successful during the season as they went on to claim the league and cup double without being defeated. Richard Whittle
Richard Whittle was born in Preston, Lancashire, in the fourth quarter of 1864 and he was a footballer who played in The Football League for Preston North End. Richard Whittle signed for Fishwick Ramblers, a Preston–based club who did appear in the FA Cup in the mid–1880s. In 1884 he moved to another Preston–based club called Preston Swifts. There appears to be no data on this club at all. In 1885 Whittle returned to Fishwick Ramblers but was gone in 1886. In 1886 Whittle joined Haydock. Haydock joined the Lancashire League 12 years after Whittle had joined. In 1888 Whittle joined Preston North End. Whittle was described as a strong–tackling defender. Richard Whittle, playing as a full–back, made his Preston North End and League debut on 6 October 1888 at Deepdale, the home of Preston North End. Robert Holmes (footballer)
Robert Holmes (23 June 1867 – 17 November 1955) was a professional footballer, who played for Preston North End. Career Holmes was the longest–serving survivor of the Preston North End team known as the 'Invincibles' when he died aged 88 in November 1955. His first club was Preston Olympic from 1883. There is no clear record of when he signed for Preston North End. Season 1887–88 was when he came to prominence. He played wing–half in the 1888 FA Cup Final played on 24 March 1888 at Kennington Oval against West Bromwich Albion. Preston North End lost 2–1. In the following month, Holmes made his international debut for England, on 7 April 1888 against Ireland. England won 5–1 at the Ulster Cricket Ground. Sammy Thomson
Samuel Thomson (14 February 1862 – 23 December 1943) was a Scottish footballer. A Scotland international, he was a member of the Preston North End side which became known as " The Invincibles". Career Thomson was born at Lugar, Scotland on 14 February 1862. His first club was Lugar Boswell, and while with them he was twice picked to play for Scotland – the only serving Lugar player to have been selected for international duty. He later had a short spell with Rangers, before becoming one of the many Scottish-born footballers who joined Preston North End as the Lancashire club assembled a side that was almost unbeatable. Thomson signed for Preston North End in 1888. Playing as a winger, he made his League debut on 15 September 1888 at Dudley Road, the then home of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
