12 Bit Blues
''12 Bit Blues'' is a studio album by Canadian DJ Kid Koala. It was released on the Ninja Tune label on September 17, 2012. It peaked at number 21 on ''Billboard''s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, as well as number 6 on the Blues Albums chart. Recording The album was recorded on an E-mu SP-1200, a 1987 drum machine and sampler known for its use in early hip hop. On the album, Kid Koala used it to manipulate old blues recordings. In making the album, Kid Koala did not use sequencing software, choosing instead to layer tracks of scratching and cutting on top of the manipulated blues samples. Critical reception At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, ''12 Bit Blues'' received an average score of 80% based on 9 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Eric Yick Keung San (born December 5, 1974), better known by his stage name Kid Koala, is a Canadian scratch DJ, music producer, theatre producer, film composer, multimedia-performer and visual artist. His career began as a scratch DJ in 1994. Kid Koala works with genres as eclectic as hip hop, ambient, alternative, contemporary classical, blues, classic rock, and traditional jazz. He has released 5 solo albums on Ninja Tune, and 3 on Arts & Crafts Records, the most recent being ''Music to Draw To: IO'' featuring Trixie Whitley. He has also released two award-winning graphic novels: ''Nufonia Must Fall'' and ''Space Cadet''. He has been a member of Deltron 3030, Lovage, and the Slew, and has collaborated with artists such as Gorillaz and the Afiara String Quartet. Metacritic is an American website that aggregates reviews of films, television shows, music albums, video games, and formerly books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted average). Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, with a satellite office in Los Angeles. It was founded in 1990 by musicians Matt Black and Jonathan More, known collectively as Coldcut. The label was established as an outlet for Coldcut to explore a style distinct from that of the mainstream music industry. History 1990–1999 Following a Coldcut tour in Japan with Norman Cook (a.k.a.
