Pigeon Mountain (New Zealand)
Pigeon Mountain (, officially Ōhuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain) is a high volcanic cone and Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountain) at Half Moon Bay, near Howick and Bucklands Beach, in Auckland, New Zealand. It is part of the Auckland volcanic field. Geography The volcano erupted around 24,000 years ago, forming a large crater and tuff ring about 500 meters wide. The prominent tuff ring is still clearly visible extending in an arc south of Sunderlands Road. Two much smaller craters were formed to the north west of the main cone. The smaller lies buried under Pigeon Mountain Road outside number 18, and the other forms Heights Park, a private reserve for the owners of 29–41 Pigeon Mountain Road and 14–36 Prince Regent Drive and 33–39 Tyrian Close. Pigeon Mountain is a mountain summit located in the Bow River Valley of Kananaskis Country in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, Canada. Its parent peak is Skogan Peak, to the southeast. Pigeon Mountain can be seen from Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway in the Canmore to Exshaw area. History This mountain was named ''Pic de Pigeons'' in 1858 by Eugene Bourgeau, the French-born botanist while on the Palliser expedition, for flocks of pigeons seen near the mountain. Since pigeons are a species that has been introduced and would not have been present in the Bow Valley in 1858, it is unclear what species of bird Bourgeau observed. The mountain's name was officially adopted in 1956 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. Geology Pigeon Mountain is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. Seebe, Alberta
Seebe is a former hamlet and ghost town in Alberta, Canada, within the Municipal District of Bighorn No. 8. It is a former Calgary Power Company Ltd. employee townsite that was closed on August 31, 2004. The name Seebe comes from the Cree word for river. History With a growing population in Calgary, and electricity becoming a standard form of power, the Calgary Power Company Ltd. was formed in the early 20th century. In 1911, a hydro-electric dam was built at Horseshoe Falls. In 1929, another hydro plant and dam was built at the Kananaskis Falls. This dam is now on Highway 1X, which connects the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) with Highway 1A (the former alignment of the Trans-Canada Highway). As Calgary grew, the Calgary Power Company Ltd. grew, with hydro dams being developed up and down the Bow River.
