The Czech Lion Awards () are annual awards that recognize accomplishments in filmmaking and television. It is the highest award of achievement in film awarded in the Czech Republic. The jury is composed of members of the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA). Eligible films must have been released in the year prior to the awards ceremony. A film, also known as a movie or motion picture, is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, emotions, or atmosphere through the use of moving images that are generally, since the 1930s, synchronized with sound and (less commonly) other sensory stimulations. ''Burning Bush'' () is a 2013 three-part miniseries created for HBO by Polish director Agnieszka Holland. Based on real characters and events, this haunting drama focuses on the personal sacrifice of a Prague history student, Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in 1969 in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in the previous year. Dagmar Burešová, a young female lawyer, became part of his legacy by defending Palach's family in a trial against the communist government, a regime which tried to dishonour Palach’s sacrifice, a heroic action for the freedom of Czechoslovakia. ''A Prominent Patient'' () is a 2016 Czech-Slovak biographical drama film directed by Julius Ševčík. It was screened in the Berlinale Special section at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. It won twelve Czech Lions including the Czech Lion for Best Film. The film was first screened in Lucerna Kino. Plot The film is set from 1937 to 1939. It is loosely based on the life of Jan Masaryk when he was the Czechoslovak ambassador to the United Kingdom. The film starts with the death of the first Czechoslovak president and Jan's father Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Jan becomes Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Czechoslovakia faces aggression from Nazi Germany, which supports the Sudeten Germans. Masaryk tries to persuade the United Kingdom to help his homeland but the Munich Agreement is eventually settled and Czechoslovakia is forced to give up its borderlands to Germany.
