The Czech Athletics Federation (, , abbreviated ČAS) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the Czech Republic. Its president since 2009 is . History The history of ČAS dates back to 1897 when ''Česká amatérská atletická unie'' (ČAAU, Czech Amateur Athletic Union) was founded. It originally covered wide range of sports including football, skiing or tennis but with the gradual establishment of separate organizations for these sports only athletics remained under ČAAU after 1911. Women's athletics, originally governed by handball federation was incorporated into ČAAU in 1928. After the end of World War II and the re-establishment of Czechoslovakia, hard negotiations took place in order to secure equal position for Slovak athletes who maintained a separate national organization during war years. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping and throwing. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, cross-country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. History Of Czechoslovakia (1948–1989)
From the Communist coup d'état in February 1948 to the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Czechoslovakia was ruled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (, ''KSČ''). The country belonged to the Eastern Bloc and was a member of the Warsaw Pact and of Comecon.
