Þór Akureyri (women's Basketball)
The Þór Akureyri women's basketball team, commonly known as Þór Akureyri, is the women's basketball department of Þór Akureyri multi sports club, based in the town of Akureyri in Iceland. It has won the national championship three times. During the 2023–2024 season, Þór participated in the top tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna for the first time in 45 years. Akureyri
Akureyri (, ) is a town in northern Iceland, the country's fifth most populous Municipalities of Iceland, municipality (under the official name of Akureyrarbær , 'town of Akureyri') and the largest outside the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region. Sylvía Rún Hálfdánardóttir
Sylvía Rún Hálfdánardóttir (born 20 September 1998) is an Icelandic basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Playing career Sylvía Rún came up through the junior ranks of Haukar and broke into the senior team in 2012. She played with Haukar until 2016, winning the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2014 and the Icelandic Company Cup in 2015. After starting the 2016-2017 season with Stjarnan, she stepped away from basketball after three games for personal reasons but returned to the team the following season where she went on to average 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds in 12 games. In September 2018, Sylvía Rún joined 1. deild kvenna club Þór Akureyri. On 5 January 2019, Sylvía posted a quadruple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in a victory against Njarðvík. Benedikt Guðmundsson
Benedikt Rúnar Guðmundsson (born 19 August 1972) is an Icelandic basketball coach. He has been named Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year twice: in the 2006–07 season and in the 2008–09 season,. In both seasons, he won the Icelandic men's championship KR. He has been named the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Coach of the year twice; in 2010, when he also won the Icelandic women's championship with KR, and in 2019. Baldur Ingi Jónasson
Baldur Ingi Jónasson (born 15 July 1972) is an Icelandic former basketball coach and player. He formerly coached Úrvalsdeild clubs Stjarnan and KFÍ. As a player, he spent 9 seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla with KFÍ and Þór Akureyri, scoring 1,616 points in 192 games. Over his career, he has played over 30 season in the Icelandic basketball league system. Playing career After starting his career with Bolungarvík and splitting two seasons with ÍKÍ and Laugdælir, Baldur transferred to KFÍ in 1994. Einar Bollason
Einar Gunnar Bollason (born 6 November 1943) is an Icelandic former basketball player, coach and TV analyst. As a player, he won the Icelandic championship six times with KR. In 2001, he was named to the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century and the coach of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Association. Madison Anne Sutton (born 13 December 1998) is an American professional basketball player the Joondalup Wolves of the NBL1 West in Australia. She played college basketball for Tusculum University before embarking on a professional career in Iceland. She played for Þór Akureyri of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna between 2022 and 2025. Fanney Lind Guðmundsdóttir Thomas (born 13 December 1989) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She is a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Career Fanney came up through the junior ranks of Hamar, playing her first senior match during the 2007–2008 season. She was a key player on the Hamar team that advanced to the 2010 Úrvalsdeild kvenna finals where it lost to KR in five games. In 2011, she joined French club Union Sportive de La Glacerie. She spent the next three seasons with Fjölnir, Hamar and Valur before signing with Þór Akureyri in 1. deild kvenna prior to the 2015-2016 season.
