Óscar Ortiz (Salvadoran Politician)
Óscar Samuel Ortiz Ascencio (born 14 February 1961) is a Salvadoran politician who served as the 36th Vice President of El Salvador from 2014 to 2019. Previously he was the Mayor of Santa Tecla. He was first elected to that position in 2000, and he was re-elected in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012. Ortiz is a member of the Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front (FMLN), the main left-wing party in El Salvador. In 2003 Ortiz lost the party's primary vote to Schafik Hándal by 47% to 53% to decide who would be the party's candidate in the 2004 presidential election. In March 2014, he was elected as vice president alongside the FMLN's presidential candidate, Salvador Sánchez Cerén. Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front
The Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front (, abbreviated FMLN) is a Salvadoran political party and former guerrilla rebel group. The FMLN was formed as an umbrella group on 10 October 1980, from five leftist guerrilla organizations; the Farabundo Martà Popular Liberation Forces (FPL), the People's Revolutionary Army (ERP), the National Resistance (RN), the Communist Party of El Salvador (PCES) and the Revolutionary Party of the Central American Workers (PRTC). The FMLN was one of the main participants in the Salvadoran Civil War. 2004 Salvadoran Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in El Salvador on 21 March 2004. Antonio Saca of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party won the election with 57% of the vote, avoiding the need for a run-off on 2 May. Presidential elections were held in El Salvador on 2 February 2014, with a second round held on 9 March since no candidate won an outright majority. Schafik Jorge Hándal Hándal (; October 14, 1930 – January 24, 2006) was a Salvadoran politician. Biography Born in Usulután, he was the son of Palestinian immigrants from the town of Bethlehem. Between 1973 and 1994, he was the general secretary of the Communist Party of El Salvador (PCES). As General Secretary of the PCES, Hándal embraced elections and rejected armed struggle to conquer political power in El Salvador. Later on, after two allegedly fraudulent elections in 1972 and in 1977, and despite the intervention of the Communist Party of Cuba (History of the FMLN, newspaper "Frente"), Handal became convinced that the defeat of the military dictatorship would not be possible through elections. Medardo González Trejo (born 16 April 1952) is a Salvadoran politician. He was the secretary general of the Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front (FMLN) from 2004 to 2019. He currently serves as a deputy in Legislative Assembly of El Salvador. Biography In 1972, he joined the Farabundo Martà Popular Liberation Forces (FPL), one of the five armed organizations which formed the Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front (FMLN) in 1980.
