The École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon is a school of art and design in Lyon, located in Les Subsistances, in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. It is part of the École des Beaux-Arts tradition, that established the Beaux-Arts architecture style. History It was founded in 1756 by abbé Lacroix-Laval and a group of art lovers. The school of drawing was free of charge and, owing to its royal charter for academies in the provinces, in 1780 it became the École Royale académique de dessin et géométrie and became one of the earliest French art schools outside Paris. Lyon (Franco-Provençal: ''Liyon'') is a city in France. Camille Bouvagne
Camille Bouvagne (born Jean-Baptiste Camille Bouvagne) (1864–1936) was a French painter from Lyon, France. A member of the Lyon School (L'École de Lyon or École lyonnaise), Bouvagne exhibited regularly at the Le Salon in Lyon (Salon de la Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts). Œuvre Bouvagne, a keen observer of nature, specialized in landscape and still life painting. His style remains split between classical Impressionism and Post-Impressionism; thin, relatively small, yet visible brush strokes, exhibiting an accurate depiction of light and colors that took precedence over lines and contours. Following the example of painters such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Bouvagne's palette is restrained, dominated by browns, blacks and silvery green, his brushstrokes carefully controlled. Jean-François Legendre-Héral
Jean-François Legendre-Héral (; 21 January 1796, Montpellier – 13 September 1851, Marcilly) was a French classical sculptor. Biography Jean-Francois Legendre-Heral was born on 21 January 1796 in Montpellier. His father was a postal worker. After his father's death, his mother married a musician, who introduced him to the arts. He was soon allowed to enroll in the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon, where he studied with Joseph Chinard and Joseph Charles Marin. In 1817, he obtained a grant from the city for a study trip to Rome. It was at this time that he added his step-father's name to his own to become Legendre-Héral. During his stay there, his fellow sculptor James Pradier accused him of casting his sculptures from life; an accusation that would later become the source of rumours in Lyon and Paris, apparently spread by François Joseph Bosio. Jean-Marie Jacomin
Jean-Marie Jacomin (1789, Lyon - 6 May 1858, Lyon) was a French painter. Life The son of Jean Antoine Jacomin and Marie Hélène Ravier, he studied at the drawing school in Lyon before being taught by Pierre Révoil in the École des Beaux-arts de Lyon from 1807 to 1813. He painted military subjects, genre paintings, portraits and interiors and also produced engravings and lithographs, such as ''Portrait of the artist'', ''Eight heads of artists from Lyon'' and ''The Good Samaritan''. François Guiguet
François Joseph Guiguet (8 January 1860 – 3 September 1937) was a French painter. Biography He was born in Corbelin. His father was a joiner and he was the fifth of twelve children. Although he drew from an early age, it was intended that he would follow his father's trade. In 1876, however, the family doctor saw some his work and was impressed. He advised them to seek out the opinion of François-Auguste Ravier, a painter and former colleague of Camille Corot, who lived in the nearby village of Morestel. Ravier was also impressed and spent three years teaching Guiguet some of the basics of art to prepare him for entry into the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon. Laurent Godin
Laurent Godin (born 1965) is a French curator, author, and contemporary art gallery owner of Galerie Laurent Godin. Life and Career Godin graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon in 1990 and subsequently worked for several years alongside gallerist Roger Pailhas, first in Marseille and then in Paris. In 1993, he collaborated with Pontus Hulten to oversee the sculpture park "Future lies ahead" for Taejon Expo'93 in South Korea. From 2000 to 2005, Godin served as the Director of the Contemporary Art Center of the City of Lyon, Le Rectangle, where he organized notable exhibitions by artists such as Wang Du, the Atelier Van Lieshout, Stephan Balkenhol, Anselm Kiefer, and others. Michel Philibert Genod
Michel Philibert Genod (20 September 1795, Lyon - 24 July 1862, Lyon) was a French genre and history painter in the Troubador style. Biography He was born while Lyon was still recovering from the effects of the Siege. He studied with Pierre Revoil from 1807 to 1813. He held his first exhibit at the Salon in 1819. Some of his works were purchased by Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry. King Louis XVIII is said to have told him, "Not only do you speak to the eyes, but you speak mainly to the heart". He was also awarded a second-class medal. He was sometimes referred to as the "Greuze of Lyon". In 1839, he was appointed a professor at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon, a position he held until his death. In 1845, he completed several paintings by his teacher, Revoil, dealing with the history of Pharamond, that Revoil had begun shortly before his death. Hippolyte Flandrin
Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin (23 March 1809 – 21 March 1864) was a French Neoclassical painter. His most celebrated work, ''Study (Young Male Nude Seated Beside the Sea), Jeune Homme Nu Assis au Bord de la Mer'' (1836) is held in the Louvre. Biography Early life From an early age, Flandrin showed interest in the arts and a career as a painter. He was the second of three sons, all of whom were painters. Auguste, his older brother, spent most of his life as a professor at Lyon and later died there. Paul Jean Flandrin, Paul, his younger brother, was a painter of portraits and religious imagery. Hippolyte and Paul spent some time at Lyon, saving to leave for Paris in 1829 and study under Louis Hersent. Antoine Duclaux
Antoine-Jean Duclaux (26 July 1783, Lyon - 21 March 1868, Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon) was a French landscape and animal painter of the Lyon School. Life The Duclaux family suffered under the Reign of Terror and were hunted out of Lyon« Antoine-Jean Duclaux – Peintre, dessinateur et graveur lyonnais », by Evelyne Pansu and Françoise Dupuis-Testenoire. Germain Détanger
Germain Détanger (27 July 1846, Lyon - 25 January 1902, Lyon) was a French painter, known primarily for his decorative work. Biography His father was a plaster contractor. He became a student of the decorative painter Joseph Guichard at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, École des Beaux-arts de Lyon in 1860. The following year, he studied portrait painting and graduated at the end of 1862. As early as 1865, he exhibited works in a wide variety of genres. He first had a showing at the Salon (Paris), Salon in 1892 and returned there in 1894. Two years later, he was named an Officer in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques. In addition to his canvases, he did decorative works, many of a religious nature, including frescoes at the chapel of the convent in Tullins (1869). Louis Deschamps (painter)
Louis Henri Deschamps was a French painter born on 25 May 1846 in Montélimar, ( Drome); died 8 August 1902 in Montélimar. Biography He was born on 25 May 1846 from Sebastien Deschamps and Hanriette Chames and gifted with natural artistic talent, after an initial training at the local school, he was educated, first, at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon under Michel Dumas (painter) and and in 1872 he entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, where he was a student of Alexandre Cabanel. He exhibited his paintings at the Salon (Paris) from 1872 to 1889, then at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts from 1890 to 1900, as well as in the Salons of the Society of Friends of the Arts of Bordeaux.
