''S Continental'' is an album by Ray Conniff and His Orchestra & Chorus. It was released in 1962 on the Columbia label (catalog nos. CS 8576 stereo and CL 1776 monaural). The album debuted on ''Billboard'' magazine's "Top LPs" chart on May 12, 1962, peaked at No. 6, and remained on that chart for 18 weeks. AllMusic later gave the album a rating of three stars. Reviewer William Ruhlmann wrote that the album marked Conniff's return to "a familiar approach" with the vocals "back to 'da'das' and 'doot-doots.'" Joseph Raymond Conniff (November 6, 1916 – October 12, 2002) was an American bandleader and arranger best known for his Ray Conniff Singers during the 1960s. Robert Craig Wright (September 25, 1914 – July 27, 2005) was an American composer-lyricist for Hollywood and the musical theatre, best known for the Broadway musical and musical film '' Kismet'', for which he and his professional and romantic partner George Forrest adapted themes by Alexander Borodin and added lyrics. ''Kismet'' was one of several Wright and Forrest creations that was commissioned by impresario Edwin Lester for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. ''Song of Norway'', ''Gypsy Lady'', '' Magdalena'', and their adaptation of '' The Great Waltz'' were also commissioned by Lester for the LACLO. Nilo Menéndez Barnet (Matanzas, 26 September 1902 - Burbank, California, 15 September 1987) was a Cuban-born naturalized American songwriter. Menéndez came to the United States in 1924 when he was 22. "Green Eyes" is a popular song, originally written in Spanish under the title "Aquellos Ojos Verdes" ("Those Green Eyes") by Adolfo Utrera and Nilo Menéndez in 1929. The English translation was made by Eddie Rivera and Eddie Woods in 1931. Spanish version The song, a bolero, was written in 1929 and recorded in Cuba the same year. It was the only major hit, both originally in Cuba and then again in the Latin community in New York for Cuban pianist Nilo Menéndez. The lyrics were supplied by Cuban tenor Adolfo Utrera. English version The English version of the song was written in 1931 but did not become a major hit till ten years later when recorded by the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra. "Lisboa Antiga" (; Portuguese for "Old Lisbon") is a Portuguese popular song that was originally written in 1937, with music by Raul Portela and Portuguese lyrics by José Galhardo and Amadeu do Vale. The song was recorded, among others, by Hermínia Silva and Amália Rodrigues. The version of song that ended being popular in the United States in the 1950s is called "Lisbon Antigua". Nelson Riddle recording *"Lisbon Antigua" was a hit in the United States when recorded by the Nelson Riddle orchestra in 1956. It was brought to Riddle's attention by Nat King Cole's manager who had heard a version played by an orchestra in Mexico. Riddle recorded his own arrangement with himself on the piano accompanied by a string section, brass, and a wordless male chorus. "Lisbon Antigua" topped the Billboard magazine chart on February 25, 1956 and remained there for four weeks. The song became a gold record. Walter Kent (born Walter Maurice Kaufman, November 29, 1911 – March 2, 1994) was an American composer and conductor.
