ORIGIN OF THE NAME "YEONGDO"
Former name of Yeong-do(Yeong Isalnd) was Jeolyeong-do(Jeolyeong Island).
Mythologically, horses that can run thousand miles, so-called "Chollima", lived at this island. Because the horses lived in this island could run so fast that their shadows could not follow them, this island had been called as "Jeolyeong-do".
After calling this island as "Jeolyeong-do", while South Korea government arranging their administrative divisions' name, they named this island as "Yeongdo-gu" except "Jeol".
Yeongdo-gu is divided into 22 legal dong, which altogether comprise 11 administrative dong, as follows:
