He participated in the writing of the 12-volume Great Patriotic War history ''Великая Отечественная война 1941—1945 годов'' (English: ''History of the Great Patriotic War 19411945''). Baranov helped write the book ''История внутренних войск'' (English: ''History of the Internal Troops'').
He is married and has two children and one granddaughter.
