Description and history

The bronze sculpture was commissioned during 1876–1877, and dedicated on December 23, 1878. It was surveyed as part of the
Smithsonian Institution The Smithsonian Institution ( ), or simply the Smithsonian, is a group of museums and education and research centers, the largest such complex in the world, created by the U.S. government "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge". Founded ...
's " Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in 1993.
