History

The original South Street Bridge was a crumbling bridge dating back to 1920. From 2003 to until its closure in 2009, pieces of the eroding bridge concrete would fall into the
Schuylkill River The Schuylkill River ( , ) is a river running northwest to southeast in eastern Pennsylvania. The river was improved by navigations into the Schuylkill Canal, and several of its tributaries drain major parts of Pennsylvania's Coal Region. It fl ...
and onto the Schuylkill Expressway. The original bridge was completely torn down and replaced by November 6, 2010.
