Campbell ran in the 2011 provincial election as the New Democratic candidate in the riding of
Kenora—Rainy River Kenora—Rainy River was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1925 to 2004. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created in 1924 from parts of Fort William and Rainy River and Por ...
. She defeated Progressive Conservative candidate Rod McKay by 2,642 votes. She was re-elected in the 2014 provincial election defeating PC candidate Randy Nickle by 6,967 votes. She was the party's critic for women's issues and aboriginal affairs. In November 2017, Campbell announced that she would not seek a third term and would be leaving politics.
