''Citrus neocaledonica'' was originally named as a member of the genus ''Citrus'' by André Guillaumin in 1911,Benjamin C. Stone (1985). "New and noteworthy palotropical species of Rutaceae", ''Proceedings of The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia'', vol. 137, pp. 213-228 but the
