Muolen

Muolen is a municipality in the ''Wahlkreis'' (constituency) of St. Gallen in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

History

Muolen is first mentioned in 1155 as ''Mola''.

Geography

Muolen has an area, , of . Of this area, 85.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 7.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.1%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes).

The municipality is located in the St Gallen ''Wahlkreis.''. It is the northernmost municipality in the canton. It consists of the village of Muolen and multiple hamlets as well as part of the ''Hudelmoos'', the last high moorland in the ''Fürstenland'' (a historic region comprising the ''Wahlkreises'' of Wil, St. Gallen and Rorschach).

There were 241 (or 22.4%) persons who were part of a couple (married or otherwise committed) without children, and 689 (or 64.2%) who were part of a couple with children. There were 32 (or 3.0%) people who lived in single parent home, while there are 12 persons who were adult children living with one or both parents, 9 persons who lived in a household made up of relatives, 10 who lived household made up of unrelated persons, and 9 who are either institutionalized or live in another type of collective housing.

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the CVP which received 38.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP (34.7%), the FDP (12.1%) and the SP (7.2%).

Transport

Muolen sits on the Bodensee–Toggenburg line between Romanshorn and St. Gallen and is served by the St. Gallen S-Bahn at Muolen railway station.
