Further career and acknowledgement

After leaving the National Bureau of Standards in 1920, Hersey was appointed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh as chief of the physical laboratory from 1922 to 1926. From 1936 to 1951 Hersey was back at the National Bureau of Standards. In World War II he served as a consultant to the
