, under the Chairmanship of Ashesh Prosad Mitra, for establishing a university of engineering and technology in West Bengal. The university was formalized on 15 January 2001 by an act of the West Bengal Legislature. The academic program of the University launched in 16 July 2001 following a notification from the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal dated 15 June 2001 through the affiliation of engineering and management institutions/colleges. The University is included in Section 2F and Section 12B of the UGC and is a recipient of the UGC Grant. The university changed its name from West Bengal University of Technology to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology in April 2015.
