Early life

Monette was born in

and graduated summa cum laude in 1996. She received her master's degree in 1997 and her Ph.D. in 2004, both in English literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She specialized in Renaissance Drama and writing her dissertation on ghosts in English Renaissance revenge tragedy.
