Etymology
The generic name derives ultimately from Latin ''morua'' ("codfish"), which became ''morlue'' in Old French and then ''molva'' in Provencal language, Provencal and ''molve'' in Modern French. Another theory derives it from Breton ''mor'' ("sea") and Old French ''luz'' ("pike (fish), pike").
