Herzig received his BA in Russian and Persian from the

, while he received his DPhil in Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. His graduation thesis was entitled 'The Armenian Merchants of New Julfa, Isfahan: A Study in Pre-Modern Asian Trade'.
