, and has had some of the highest poverty and crime rates in the borough of Walsall. The whole ward has been dominated by council housing mostly built in the 1930s, although a significant percentage of the older council housing was demolished during the first decade of the 21st century. However, the area has improved since being included in the Labour government's New Deal initiative in 2001. Community facilities and housing have been improved, and unlike the large scale demolition in other parts of Blakenall, relatively little demolition has taken place around Coal Pool, with the overwhelming majority of the properties being refurbished.
