On 8 January 2021, he departed from Gloucester, joining Chesterfield later that day, following the path of former manager at Gloucester James Rowe and former teammates Akwasi Asante and George Carline. Whittle was released by Chesterfield at the end of the 2021–22 season. On 2 July 2022, Whittle returned to newly promoted National League club York City.
