OR:

Group 5 was one of six groups of national teams competing in the group stage of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Play began on 16 June and ended on 25 June 1982. The group consisted of four teams: Seeded team and host nation Spain national football team, Spain, World Cup debutants Honduras national football team, Honduras, Yugoslavia national football team, Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland national football team, Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland won the group after defeating Spain in their final group game, who also progressed to the second round in a game marred by controversy, as was the West Germany-Austria game that was later described as the Disgrace of Gijón where only the scoreline was 1- 0 for Northern Ireland led both teams to the second round of the competition. The match between Northern Ireland and Spain was played the day after Yugoslavia defeated Honduras, so the Northern Irish and the Spanish knew even a day earlier which result was needed for their progress in the World Cup.
