66th New York State Legislature
The 66th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 3 to April 18, 1843, during the first year of William C. Bouck's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. Assemblymen were elected countywide on general tickets to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. On April 5, 1842, the Legislature enacted that future state elections be held on a single day, fixing the date on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November. State Senator John W. Thurlow Weed
Edward Thurlow Weed (November 15, 1797 – November 22, 1882) was a printer, New York newspaper publisher, and Whig and Republican politician. He was the principal political advisor to prominent New York politician William H. Seward and was instrumental in the presidential nominations of William Henry Harrison (1840), Zachary Taylor (1848), and John C. Frémont (1856). Born in Cairo, New York, Weed apprenticed as a printer under William Williams and served with him in the War of 1812 before winning election to the New York State Assembly. He met Seward in the assembly, and they formed a close political alliance that lasted for several decades. Weed and Seward became leaders of the New York Anti-Masonic Party, and Weed established the ''Albany Evening Journal'' as the party's main newspaper. Edwin Croswell (May 29, 1797 in Catskill, New York – June 13, 1871 in Princeton, New Jersey), was an American journalist and politician. Croswell's father and uncle were both influential editors and journalists in the early 19th century. Edwin expanded the family's influence on American journalism. Willis Hall (April 1, 1801July 14, 1868) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life Hall was born on April 1, 1801, in Granville, Washington County, New York, the son of Rev. Nathaniel Hall (1764–1820) and Hannah Emerson Hall (1773–1832). He graduated from Yale College in 1824, studied law in New York City and Litchfield, Connecticut. He was admitted to the bar in 1827, and practiced in Mobile, Alabama from 1827 to 1831, and then in New York City. He married Helen Haudley. He was a Whig member of the New York State Assembly from New York County in 1838, and from Albany County in 1843. He was New York State Attorney General from 1839 to 1842, elected by the New York State Legislature after the Whigs obtained the majority at the 1838 elections. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. Harvey Putnam (January 5, 1793 – September 20, 1855) was an American lawyer and politician. He was a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and served in the New York Senate. Early life Putnam was born in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont, the youngest of nine children of Asa Putnam and Anna (Collins) Putnam. His father died while he was an infant, and he went with his mother to live with relatives in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and later with relatives in Cobleskill, New York. John Porter (October 24, 1790 Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts – February 3, 1874 Auburn, Cayuga County, New York) was an American politician from New York. Life He graduated from Williams College in 1810. He then studied law in Albany, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1815, and commenced practice in Auburn. He served as District Attorney of Cayuga County from 1821 to 1828. In 1825, he married Abigail M. Phillips (1800–1886), a niece of Congressman Gurdon S. Mumford (1764–1831), and they had five children. He was Surrogate of Cayuga County from 1828 to 1836.
