Valvettithurai ( ta, வல்வெட்டித்துறை, translit=Valveṭṭittuṟai; si, වල්වෙට්ටිතුරෙයි, translit=Valveṭṭitureyi), sometimes shortened as VVT or Valvai, is a coastal town of Jaffna District on the northeast coast of the Jaffna Peninsula in Northern Province, Sri Lanka governed by an Valvettithurai Urban Council, Urban Council of the same name. Valvettithurai was historically known for its seafaring traditions and olden transnational shipping trade. The town is popularly known for being the birthplace of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or the Tamil Tigers, a Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism, Tamil nationalist militant group that waged a war for Tamil Eelam, an independent state in the North and East. Valvettithurai Urban Council ( ta, வல்வெட்டித்துறை நகர சபை ''Valveṭṭittuṟai Nakara Capai''; VUC) is the local authority for the town of Valvettithurai in northern Sri Lanka. VUC is responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. It has 9 members elected using the open list proportional representation system. Election results 1983 local government election Results of the local government election held on 18 May 1983: According to the pro- LTTE TamilNet, the Sri Lankan government had suspended all local government in the north and east of the country in 1983 using emergency regulations. The civil war prevented elections from being held for VUC until 1998 as the LTTE did not hold elections when it controlled the area.
