The ''Times of Malta'' is an English-language daily newspaper in Malta. Founded in 1935, by Lord and Lady Strickland and Lord Strickland's daughter Mabel, it is the oldest daily newspaper still in circulation in Malta. It has the widest circulation and is seen as the daily newspaper of record of the Maltese press. The newspaper is published by Allied Newspapers Limited, which is owned by the Strickland Foundation, a charitable trust established by Mabel Strickland in 1979 to control the majority of the company. Compact (newspaper)
A compact newspaper is a broadsheet-quality newspaper printed in a tabloid format, especially one in the United Kingdom. The term as used for this size came into use after '' The Independent'' began producing a smaller format edition in 2003 for London's commuters, designed to be easier to read when using mass transit. Readers from other parts of the country liked the new format, and ''The Independent'' introduced it nationally. ''The Times'' and '' The Scotsman'' copied the format as ''The Independent'' increased in sales. Constitutional Party (Malta)
The Constitutional Party ( mt, Partit Kostituzzjonali) was a pro-British political party in Malta. It had representatives in the Maltese Legislative Assembly and Council of Government between 1921 and 1945, and again between 1950 and 1953, forming a government between 1927 and 1930 with the support of the Labour Party. A splinter group, the Progressive Constitutionalist Party was represented in Parliament between 1962 and 1966. The party was very much centred on the figure (and wealth) of its long-time leader Lord Strickland, with party supporters colloquially known in Maltese as "''Stricklandjani''". Joseph Muscat
Joseph Muscat (born 22 January 1974) is a Maltese politician who served as the prime minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020, and as the leader of the Labour Party from June 2008 to January 2020. Muscat was re-elected as prime minister in the elections of 3 June 2017 (55.04% after 54.83% in 2013). Previously he was a member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2008. He was the leader of the opposition from October 2008 to March 2013. Muscat identifies as a progressive and liberal politician, with pro-business leanings, and has been associated with both economically liberal and socially liberal policies. Keith Schembri (born in Cospicua, 26 July 1975) is Maltese businessman and political strategist who served as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat from 11 March 2013 to 26 November 2019. Schembri resigned in relation to the murder investigation of Daphne Caruana Galizia and in course of the political crises in Malta. The crisis also led to unprecedented protests in Malta, which called for Schembri's resignation. Biography In 1996 Schembri established Kasco Holdings, a group of companies providing various services and products within the fields of graphic art and engineering. Black Monday (Malta)
Black Monday in Malta refers to 15 October 1979 when the Progress Press (publisher of ''The Times'') and the home of Eddie Fenech Adami, then Leader of the Opposition, were ransacked following a rally by the Labour Party. Background A spontaneous political rally was held by Labour supporters following an alleged attempt on Prime Minister Dom Mintoff's life in his offices at the Auberge de Castille, Valletta. Events That evening a large crowd gathered outside the Prime Minister's office in an expression of solidarity and from there marched toward the Progress Press offices on St. Paul Street, Valletta. The building was ransacked and set on fire. Many historical archives were burnt during the fire. Although the printing press was destroyed, ''The Times'' was still published as usual the following day (though in a reduced format) from the printing press of the Nationalist Party.
