George Steeves
George Steeves (b. ca. 1945) is a Canadian art photographer noted for his highly personal work. He has been called by art historian and curator Martha Langford, "among the foremost figures of contemporary Canadian photography." Life Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Steeves attended school in Ottawa and studied engineering at Carleton University and Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He has lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia since 1973 and worked as an engineer with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, where he was supervisor of mechanical and oceanographic systems development before retiring in 2006. In the 1970s, he began making urban landscape photographs using an 8x10 negative camera and developing and printing his own work. In 1981, inspired by local performance artist Ellen Pierce, he decided to focus on figurative work. David Steeves
David Steeves (1934 – October 16, 1965) was a U.S. Air Force first lieutenant and, after leaving the Air Force, worked briefly as an airline pilot before establishing a small aviation firm in Fresno, California. He is best known for an incident in 1957 when he ejected from his T-33 jet trainer over California's Kings Canyon National Park. Presumed dead by the Air Force, Steeves nevertheless wandered out of the wilderness after 54 days. He became a national hero until the news media raised doubts about his story. Lieutenant Steeves had been ordered to fly his jet on a training flight from Hamilton Air Force Base near San Francisco, California to Craig Air Force Base near Selma, Alabama on May 9, 1957. Wayne Steeves
O. Wayne Steeves (born December 12, 1944) is a politician in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. Steeves was born in Lower Coverdale, New Brunswick, the son of Noel Steeves and Vera Downing. A Progressive Conservative, he has been a candidate for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick for the electoral district of Albert in every election since 1991. Defeated in 1991 and 1995, Steeves was finally elected in 1999. He was re-elected in 2003 and joined the cabinet as minister of public safety. He was again re-elected in 2006 but left the cabinet as his party formed the opposition. Manoah Steves
Manoah Steves (originally Steeves) (1828-1897) was the founder of Steveston, British Columbia, which is named in his honour. The village has since been amalgamated into the city of Richmond in Metro Vancouver. Family Steves was a descendant of Heinrich Stief and Regina Stahlecker, founders of the Steeves family in North America. As a Stief descendant, Steves is a second cousin of William Steeves, a Father of Canadian Confederation. He is also the great-grandfather of Richmond politician Harold Steves, who as of 2021 owns the farm founded by Manoah. Life Born in New Brunswick, in 1868 Steves moved to Ontario with his wife Martha, followed by a brief sojourn in the American state of Maryland. Harold Steves
Harold Steves (born May 29, 1937) is a Canadian politician. Steves is a longtime city councillor on Richmond, British Columbia City Council, first elected in 1969 and re-elected in 1977, after serving one term as the New Democratic Party of British Columbia MLA from 1972 to 1975. Personal life Harold Steves is a descendant of Heinrich Stief and Regina Stahlecker, founders of the Steeves family in North America. Steveston, founded in the 1880s, is a neighbourhood of Richmond in Metro Vancouver. On the southwest tip of Lulu Island, the village is a historic port and salmon canning centre at the mouth of the South Arm of the Fraser River.
