South Dakota Legislature
The South Dakota State Legislature is the legislative branch of the government of South Dakota. It is a bicameral legislative body, consisting of the South Dakota Senate, which has 35 members, and the South Dakota House of Representatives, which has 70 members. The two houses are similar in most respects; the Senate alone holds the right to confirm gubernatorial appointments to certain offices. In addition, the Senate votes by roll call vote, whereas the larger house uses an electronic voting system. The legislature meets at the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre. It begins its annual session of the second Tuesday of January each year. The legislative session lasts 40 working days in odd-numbered years, and 35 days working days in even numbered years. Though, in recent years, the legislature has completed its work in 38 working days in both even numbered years as well as odd numbered years. A president pro tempore or speaker pro tempore is a constitutionally recognized officer of a legislative body who presides over the chamber in the absence of the normal presiding officer. The phrase '' pro tempore'' is Latin "for the time being". In Argentina, a similar role is carried by the Provisional President of the Argentine Senate in the absence of the Vice President of Argentina. Day County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,449. Its county seat is Webster. The county is named for Merritt H. Day, pioneer and 1879 Dakota Territory legislator. Geography The terrain of Day County consists of rolling hills, partly devoted to agriculture. Brown County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 38,301, making it the fourth-most populous county in South Dakota. Its county seat is Aberdeen. The county is named for Alfred Brown, of Hutchinson County, South Dakota, a Dakota Territory legislator in 1879. Brown County is part of the Aberdeen, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Brown County lies on the north side of South Dakota. Its north boundary line abuts the south boundary line of the state of North Dakota. Aberdeen, South Dakota
Aberdeen ( Lakota: ''Ablíla'') is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, South Dakota, United States, located approximately northeast of Pierre. The city population was 28,495 at the 2020 census, making it the third most populous city in the state after Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Aberdeen is the principal city of the Aberdeen Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Brown and Edmunds counties and has a population of 42,287 in 2020. Aberdeen is considered a college town, being the home of both Northern State University and Presentation College. History Settlement Before Aberdeen or Brown County was inhabited by European settlers, it was inhabited by the Sioux Indians from approximately 1700 to 1879. Reynold Nesiba
Reynold F. Nesiba (born May 7, 1966) is an American politician and a Democratic member of the South Dakota Senate representing District 15 since January 10, 2017. Nesiba is also a professor of economics at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Early life and education Nesiba was born in St. Paul, Nebraska, to Leonard Nesiba, a World War II veteran and small business owner, and Irene (Schmale) Nesiba. Together, Nesiba's parents owned and operated Nesiba's Cafe in St. Paul. In 1989, Nesiba earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of Denver. Six years later, he completed his PhD in economics from the University of Notre Dame, where he also procured his master's degree. Red Dawn Foster is an American politician serving as a member of the South Dakota Senate from the 27th district, which encompasses the Pine Ridge Reservation as well as Bennett, Haakon, Jackson, Pennington and Oglala Lakota counties. Helene Duhamel
Helene Duhamel (born 1962) is an American politician and journalist serving as a member of the South Dakota Senate from the 32nd district. Early life and education A native of Rapid City, South Dakota, attended St. Martin's Academy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and international relations from Stanford University in 1984. Career After graduating from college, she worked as a news anchor for KDUH in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In 1989, she returned to Rapid City.
