Shetland Gas Plant
The Shetland Gas Plant is a natural-gas processing plant in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. History The site is the collection point for the Laggan-Tormore project, involving two large gas fields. The Laggan gas field was discovered in 1986. The Tormore gas field was discovered in 2007. The plan for the site was approved in March 2010. The site was formally opened by Amber Rudd on 16 May 2016. Structure The site is connected to the Shetland Islands Regional Gas Export Pipeline (SIRGE). The site was built by Petrofac's Offshore Engineering & Operations unit; Petrofac is a recent constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. The site and pipelines cost around £800m. The gas is exported from the site via a diameter pipe south to the Frigg UK System in Aberdeenshire. The site is next door, to the east, of the Sullom Voe Terminal. Sullom Voe
Sullom Voe is an inlet of the North Sea between the parishes of Delting and Northmavine in Shetland, Scotland. It is a location of the Sullom Voe oil terminal and Shetland Gas Plant. The word Voe is from the Old Norse ' and denotes a small bay or narrow creek. The head of the voe makes up the eastern side of Mavis Grind. The Voe, the longest in Shetland, and partially sheltered by the island of Yell was used as a military airfield during World War II both by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Norwegian Air Force as a location for flying boats. With the coming of the oil terminal, the remains of the airfield were upgraded and modernised to create Scatsta Airport which was primarily used to service the terminal. West Of Shetland Pipeline
The West of Shetland Pipeline (WOSP) is a pipeline system which transports natural gas from three offshore fields in the West of Shetland area to Sullom Voe Terminal in the Shetland Isles of Scotland. West of Shetland area The West of Shetland area is a region in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where there are currently three developed offshore fields; Schiehallion, Foinaven and Clair. A number of further hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the area, but these are not currently considered to be economic due to the high costs of development. St Fergus Gas Terminal
The St Fergus Gas Terminal is a large gas terminal found near St Fergus, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The other main UK gas terminals are at Bacton, Norfolk and the Easington, East Riding of Yorkshire. History The plant was initially developed by British Gas (now National Grid) and Total Oil Marine. The three main plants have three main pipelines each coming ashore. The National Grid plant receives gas from the other main three plants. In total, St Fergus receives around 25% of the UK's gas. Natural-gas processing is a range of industrial processes designed to purify raw natural gas by removing impurities, contaminants and higher molecular mass hydrocarbons to produce what is known as ''pipeline quality'' dry natural gas.
