Seinäjoki
Seinäjoki (; "Wall River"; la, Wegelia, formerly sv, Östermyra) is a city located in South Ostrobothnia, Finland; east of Vaasa, north of Tampere, west of Jyväskylä and southwest of Oulu. Seinäjoki originated around the Östermyra bruk iron and gunpowder factories founded in 1798. Seinäjoki became a municipality in 1868, market town in 1931 and town in 1960. In 2005, the municipality of Peräseinäjoki was merged into Seinäjoki, and in the beginning of 2009, the neighbouring municipalities of Nurmo and Ylistaro were consolidated with Seinäjoki. Seinäjoki is one of the fastest growing regional centers in Finland. The city hall, city library, Lakeuden Risti Church and other public buildings were designed by Alvar Aalto. Seinäjoki was historically called ' in Swedish. Today this name, which never was official, is very seldom used even among the Swedish speakers. Seinäjoki City Hall
The Seinäjoki City Hall is the main municipal administrative building in the city of Seinäjoki, Finland. It is notable for having been designed by the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Architecture The building is based on Aalto's 1959 winning entry into a design contest for the new Seinäjoki urban plan, and was completed three years later in 1962. It was comprehensively renovated in the 2010s, with the work finished in 2018. The exterior cladding of the main facade features dark blue ceramic tiles which appear to change colour under different lighting conditions. The city council assembly hall was designed to serve a dual purpose as a concert venue. Seinäjoki Airport
Seinäjoki Airport ( fi, Seinäjoen lentoasema; ) is an airport in Ilmajoki, Finland, about south-southwest of Seinäjoki city centre. The airport has been operated since 2016 by Seinäjoen Lentoasema Oy (Seinäjoki Airport Ltd). Before that (from 1976 to 2016) it was operated by Rengonharju-säätiö (Rengonharju Foundation). Facilities The airport resides at an elevation of above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 14/32 with an asphalt surface measuring . Airlines and destinations At the moment there are no scheduled flights and the traffic consists mainly of private business and charter flights, in addition to general aviation. In the past, scheduled flights from Seinäjoki have been operated at least by Finnair, Finncomm Airlines, Flybe Nordic, Direktflyg, Golden Air, Air Botnia and Wasawings which was the first scheduled operator of the airport in 1983. Alvar Aalto
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (; 3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, as well as sculptures and paintings. He never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as "branches of the tree whose trunk is architecture." Aalto's early career ran in parallel with the rapid economic growth and industrialization of Finland during the first half of the 20th century. Many of his clients were industrialists, among them the Ahlström-Gullichsen family, who became his patrons. Ilmajoki
Ilmajoki (; sv, Ilmola) is a municipality of Finland. Ilmajoki is a town and municipality situated in Finland's South Ostrobothnia region, founded in 1865. Ilmajoki has a population of 12,165 (28. February 2017)and covers an area of 579.79 km2 (223.86 sq mi), of which 2.89 km2 (1.12 sq mi) is water. The population density is 20.2 inhabitants per square kilometre (52.3 per sq mi). Ilmajoki borders the municipalities of Isokyrö, Kurikka, Laihia and Seinäjoki. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Lakeuden Risti Church
Lakeuden Risti Church ( fi, Lakeuden Ristin kirkko; lit. "Cross of the Plains Church") is a Lutheran church located in Seinäjoki, Finland. The church was designed by Alvar Aalto and built between 1957–1960. It was the first finished building of the larger administrative and civic center also planned by Aalto, consisting of Seinäjoki town hall, a library, a theater and a state office building. Architecture The cathedral-like building seats 1200 people in the hall and 124 in the organ gallery. In the '' Gesamtkunstwerk'' spirit Aalto also designed silverware, antependiums, altar cloths and two stained glass paintings for the church. The cross-shaped bell tower from which the church gets its name is 65 meters high and a local landmark. South Ostrobothnia ( fi, Etelä-Pohjanmaa; sv, Södra Österbotten) is one of the 19 regions of Finland. It borders the regions of Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Pirkanmaa, and Satakunta. Among the Finnish regions, South Ostrobothnia is the ninth largest in terms of population. Ylistaro is a former municipality of Finland. It was consolidated, together with Nurmo to Seinäjoki on 1 January 2009. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Southern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality had a population of 5,582 (2003) and covered an area of 484.08 km² of which 2.73 km² is water. The population density was 11.6 inhabitants per km². Kurikka is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Southern Ostrobothnia region.
