Saudi Arabia At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Saudi Arabia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's tenth appearance at the Olympics, except the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, because of its partial support to the United States boycott. The Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee sent the nation's largest delegation to the Games after the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Saudi Arabia also made a historic Olympic record by having two female athletes in the team for the first time, along with seventeen men playing for five different sports. Six athletes had competed in Beijing, including discus thrower Sultan Mubarak Al-Dawoodi, who became the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee
Saudi Olympic & Paralympic Committee (IOC code: KSA; ar, اللجنة الأولمبية السعودية وأولمبياد المعاقين) is the National Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee representing Saudi Arabia. Until the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Saudi Arabia was one of three countries that had never had a female competitor at the games. The other two countries, Qatar and Brunei, also selected women to compete for the first time. Qatar has competed in 10 Summer Olympic Games. They have never competed in the Winter Olympic Games. Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani (or "Shaherkani"; ar, وجدان علي سراج الدين شهرخاني; born 1 February 1996) is a Saudi judo competitor who was one of two women selected to represent the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the first woman to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics. Career Shaherkani took up judo because of her father, a judo referee. Dalma Malhas is an equestrian. She was supposed to be the first Saudi female athlete to compete at the Summer Olympics. When she rode at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, she was amongst a high-profile group of speakers who addressed the recent International Olympic Committee Women and Sport conference in Los Angeles.
