Reed Bank
Reed Tablemount (also referred to as Reed Bank, Recto Bank and several other names) is a large tablemount or guyot in the South China Sea north-east of Dangerous Ground and north-east of the Spratly Islands. It covers an area of , but with depths between 9 and only 45 meters. The submerged but hydrocarbon-rich area includes Nares Bank and Marie Louise Bank. Although the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled in 2016 that the area is within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone, economic rights to the area continue to be disputed – mainly by the People's Republic of China – and exploitation of the hydrocarbon reserves by the Philippines were suspended in 2015. The South China Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean. The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN; ), also known as the People's Navy, Chinese Navy, or PLA Navy, is the maritime service branch of the People's Liberation Army. A petroleum reservoir or oil and gas reservoir is a subsurface accumulation of hydrocarbons contained in porous or fractured rock formations. Such reservoirs form when kerogen (ancient plant matter) is created in surrounding rock by the presence of high heat and pressure in the Earth's crust. Petroleum reservoirs are broadly classified as ''conventional'' and '' unconventional'' reservoirs. In conventional reservoirs, the naturally occurring hydrocarbons, such as crude oil or natural gas, are trapped by overlying rock formations with lower permeability, while in unconventional reservoirs, the rocks have high porosity and low permeability, which keeps the hydrocarbons trapped in place, therefore not requiring a cap rock. 2019 Reed Bank Incident
The 2019 Reed Bank incident occurred when ''F/B Gem-Ver'', a Philippine fishing boat anchored in Reed Bank in the South China Sea, sank after it was rammed by a Chinese vessel, ''Yuemaobinyu 42212'', during the early morning hours of 9 June 2019. The stricken vessel's crew were later rescued by a Vietnamese fishing vessel. An independent investigation by Philippine authorities later determined that the Chinese vessel involved in the incident failed to undertake measures to avoid colliding with the ''F/B Gem-Ver'' and abandoned the stricken boat's crew, in violation of maritime laws. Background ''F/B Gem-Ver'' sailed from San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on 29 May 2019, with 22 crewmen led by captain Junel Insigne. USS Harnett County (LST-821)
USS ''LST-821'', renamed USS ''Harnett County'' (LST-821/AGP-281), was an built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was named for Harnett County, North Carolina and was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. She served the United States Navy in World War II and the Vietnam War. She was transferred to South Vietnam's Republic of Vietnam Navy, which named her RVNS ''My Tho'' (HQ-800). After the Vietnam War, ''Harnett County'' was transferred to the Philippine Navy, which named her BRP ''Sierra Madre'' (LT-57). Mischief Reef
Mischief Reef, also known as Panganiban Reef ( tl, Bahura ng Panganiban); vi, Đá Vành Khăn; also known in Mandarin ;, is a low tide elevation (LTE) reef/atoll surrounding a large lagoon in the SE of Dangerous Ground in the east of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. It is located west of Palawan Island of the Philippines. Administratively, it belonged to the Kalayaan Islands municipality of the province of Palawan. Activities by the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the mid-2010s have created a large artificial island on the atoll which has included an approximately runway and associated airfield.
