Raritan River
Raritan River is a major river of New Jersey. Its watershed drains much of the mountainous area of the central part of the state, emptying into the Raritan Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. History Geologists assert that the lower Raritan provided the course of the mouth of the Hudson River approximately 6,000 years ago. Following the end of the last ice age, the Narrows had not yet been formed and the Hudson flowed along the Watchung Mountains to present-day Bound Brook, then followed the course of the Raritan eastward into Lower New York Bay. The name Raritan possibly derives from a branch of the Lenape people called the Nariticongs, the first people known to settle the Raritan Valley. Bridgewater Township, New Jersey
Bridgewater Township is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. The township is both a regional commercial hub for Central New Jersey (home to Bridgewater Commons and different corporate headquarters) and is a bedroom suburb of New York City in the much larger New York Metropolitan Area, located within the heart of the Raritan Valley region. The township is located roughly away from Manhattan and about away from Staten Island. Raritan (tribe)
The Raritan were bands of the Lenape people living around the Raritan River and its bay, in what is now northeastern New Jersey and Staten Island, New York. The name "Raritan" most likely comes from one of the Lenape languages (among the languages in the Algonquian language group), though there are a variety of interpretations as to its meaning. It may be a derivation of ''Naraticong'' meaning "river beyond the island", or ''Roaton'' or ''Raritanghe'', names of a group which had come from across the Hudson and displaced the previous population known as ''Sanhican''. Peters Brook (Raritan River)
Peters Brook is a tributary of the Raritan River that flows south through Bridgewater Township and Somerville, New Jersey, in the United States. Some of its tributaries include Ross Brook and Mac's Brook. Peters Brook is approximately six miles long, beginning near the west side of I-287 and emptying into the Raritan River south of Somerville. The Brook is named for Peter Van Nest, son of Dutch immigrant Pieter Van Nest. The homestead of the Van Nest family was in nearby Raritan near Glaser Avenue. Peter Van Nest fought in the American Revolutionary War under Jacob Ten Eyck's command. Peters Brook is notable for having high phosphate levels and flooding, receiving large amounts of stormwater.
