Rapsody
Marlanna Evans (born January 21, 1983), better known by her stage name Rapsody, is an American rapper. Her second album, ''Laila's Wisdom'' (2017), which was critically acclaimed, received two Grammy Award nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. Rapsody released her third studio album, '' Eve'' on August 23, 2019 to critical acclaim from music critics. Career Rapsody began her career at North Carolina State University, where she joined hip hop collective H2O and its spinoff group Kooley High, despite not having rapped before. The group met producer 9th Wonder in 2004, who was impressed by one of Rapsody's verses, and she would go on to make her recording debut on 9th Wonder's sophomore album, '' The Dream Merchant Vol. 2'' which released on October 9, 2007, in which she free styled over 9th's re-chopping of old samples he already used for other artists. Eve (Rapsody Album)
''Eve'' is the third studio album by American rapper Rapsody, released on August 23, 2019. Each song is named for an influential black woman, including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Myrlie Evers, and Aaliyah. ''Eve'' also samples artists like Phil Collins (his hit single "In the Air Tonight" was sampled on the second track "Cleo"), Nina Simone and Herbie Hancock. Production Rapsody decided to write the album in 2018 when a writer asked her if she felt that she was a successor to Nina Simone and Roberta Flack. She crafted an album with each song dedicated to one of her heroes. Critical reception ''Eve'' was critically acclaimed by contemporary music critics at the time of its release. ''Laila's Wisdom'' is the second studio album by American rapper Rapsody, released on September 22, 2017, by Jamla Records and Roc Nation. It is Rapsody's first album released under her partnership with Roc Nation. The album features collaborations with Kendrick Lamar (with whom Rapsody had previously collaborated on ''To Pimp a Butterfly''), Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes, Lance Skiiiwalker, Black Thought, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Musiq Soulchild, among others. Background The album is Rapsody's first following her signing with Roc Nation in 2016, and follows her mixtape ''Crown'' (2016). History 9th Wonder founded It's A Wonderful World Music Group shortly after leaving the group Little Brother (group), Little Brother. The company initially had distribution from Warner Music Group under Asylum and Warner Bros. Records.
