Jackie Presser
Jackie Presser (August 6, 1926 – July 9, 1988) was an American labor leader and president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1983 until his death in 1988. He was closely connected to organized crime, and allegedly became president of the Teamsters based on the approval and support of the Cleveland Mafia. From 1972 until his death, he was also an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation concerning Mafia influence in the Teamsters union. Early life Presser was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1926. His grandfather, a Jewish emigrant from Austria, became a garment worker, and was active in and participated in several strikes led by various garment makers' unions in New York City. Presser's father, William (Bill) Presser, was at the time of Jackie's birth a Teamster organizer. Gábor Presser (born 27 May 1948) is a Kossuth Prize winning Hungarian musician, composer, singer. He was a band member in Locomotiv GT and Omega, and has been a prominent personality in Hungarian pop and rock music. Biography Childhood Born in Budapest in 1948, his parents are Géza Presser and Elvira Uhrman. His father worked as a poultry dealer in the Great Market hall at Klauzál square. After school his son, Gábor went out to help him. Jacques Presser
Jacob (Jacques) Presser (24 February 1899 in Amsterdam – 30 April 1970 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch historian, writer and poet who is known for his book ''Ashes in the Wind (The Destruction of the Dutch Jews)'' on the history of the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands during World War II. Presser made a significant contribution to Dutch historical scholarship, as well as to European historical scholarship. Early life Presser was born in the former Jewish quarter of Amsterdam. His family was rather poor (his father was a diamond cutter), and his parents, who were secular Jews, had socialist leanings. Presser himself in later life, also gravitated towards the left. Harriet Presser
Harriet B. Presser (1936–2012) was a sociologist and demographer. Having served on the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park, for more than 30 years, at the time of her death she was a Distinguished University Professor. She was elected president of the Population Association of America for the year 1989. In addition, she was awarded the Jessie Bernard Award from the American Sociological Association in 2010, and was elected as a Fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2002. As a scholar, she studied the intersection of gender, work and family, and pioneered the sociological specialization in that area. She was widely recognized for bringing a feminist perspective to the demographic study of such issues as fertility, child care, housework, and the effects of the global 24/7 service economy. Josef Presser
Josef Presser (1907-1967) was an American artist. Biography Presser was born in 1907 in Lublin, Poland. He emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. During the 1930s Presser painted murals as part of the Works Progress Administration program. He settled in New York City where he worked as a painter and teacher. He married fellow artist Agnes Hart (1912-1979) in 1941. The couple had studio space in Woodstock, New York. He was associated with the New York print studio Atelier 17. Presser died in Paris in 1967. Leon Presser is an American professor, entrepreneur, writer and software engineer. He was honored by the White House as an influential Hispanic leader. Academics Presser obtained a BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1961. He then moved to Los Angeles, California, and went to work in the nascent computer industry as a computer designer. At the same time, he pursued a master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Computer Science), which he received from the USC in 1964. He then joined the computer research group at UCLA, where he simultaneously commenced his studies for a PhD in Computer Science, which he received in 1968. Bram Presser (born 1976) is a Melbourne personality, known for his involvement in the Melbourne music scene and Jewish community. He fronted the Jewish punk rock prankster band Yidcore and was the singing voice for Mick Molloy in the 2006 Australian comedy film BoyTown. Following the breakup of Yidcore in December 2009, Presser turned to writing. He is a monthly columnist for The Australian Jewish News and is the author of the literary blog ''Bait For Bookworms''. His first short story, ''The Prisoner of Babel'', was published in Volume 7 of ''The Sleepers Almanac'' and another story, ''Crumbs'', won The Age Short Story Award for 2011.
