Portuguese Americans ( pt, português-americanos), also known as Luso-Americans (''luso-americanos''), are citizens and residents of the United States who are connected to the country of Portugal by birth, ancestry, or citizenship. Americans and others who are not native Europeans from Portugal but originate from countries that were former colonies of Portugal do not necessarily self-identify as "Portuguese-American", but rather as their post-colonial nationalities, although many refugees (referred to as '' retornados'') from former Portuguese colonies, as well as many white Brazilians, are ethnically or ancestrally Portuguese. Melungeon
Melungeons ( ) are an ethnicity from the Southeastern United States who descend from Europeans, Native American, and sub-Saharan Africans brought to America as indentured servants and later as slaves. Historically, the Melungeons were associated with settlements in the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia, which includes portions of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. ''Tri-racial'' describes populations who claim to be of mixed European, African and Native American ancestry. Isaac Touro
Isaac Touro (1738 – 8 December 1783) was a Dutch-born American rabbi. He was a Jewish leader in colonial America. Born in Amsterdam, in 1758 he left for Jamaica. In 1760, he arrived in Newport, Rhode Island to serve as hazzan and spiritual leader of Jeshuath Israel, a Portuguese Sephardic congregation.Henry Samuel Morais''Eminent Israelites of the Nineteenth Century: A Series of Biographical Sketches'' p. 336. Soon after his arrival the congregation built the Touro Synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in the United States. When the American Revolution broke out, Touro was a Loyalist, and when the British captured Newport in 1776, he remained in the city with his wife Reyna and their children, while many of his Whig congregants fled. In 1779, he moved with the British to New York, but he had no means of supporting himself there, and was dependent on British charity, so in 1782 he moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where he died in 1783. Touro Synagogue
The Touro Synagogue or Congregation Jeshuat Israel ( he, קהל קדוש ישועת ישראל) is a synagogue built in 1763 in Newport, Rhode Island. It is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States, the only surviving synagogue building in the U.S. dating to the colonial era, and the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America. In 1946, it was declared a National Historic Site. The first congregation was made up of Sephardic Jews, who are believed to have come via the West Indies, where they participated in the triangular trade along with Dutch and English settlements. They practiced a Spanish and Portuguese Jewish liturgy and ritual. In the late eighteenth century, when warfare threatened, the congregation transferred the deed and Torah scrolls to Congregation Shearith Israel in New York for safekeeping. Mathias De Sousa
Mathias de Sousa was the first Black elected Representative in America. A free man, Sousa was of African and Portuguese descent. Life It is believed that Sousa's father was born in Portugal. Within colonial Maryland society, Sousa was defined as a " mulatto", a person of mixed African and European descent. Sousa worked as an indentured servant for Fr Andrew White, a Catholic priest in the Jesuits; Sousa is also believed to have been Catholic. Following his indentured servitude, which ended in 1638, Sousa worked as a fur trader and a mariner. In March 1641, Sousa was elected as a Representative at a Maryland Assembly meeting. Portuguese nationality law details the conditions by which a person is a national of Portugal. The primary law governing nationality regulations is the Nationality Act, which came into force on 3 October 1981. Portugal is a member state of the European Union (EU) and all Portuguese nationals are EU citizens. They have automatic and permanent permission to live and work in any EU or European Economic Area (EEA) country and may vote in elections to the European Parliament. All persons born in Portugal before 3 October 1981 were automatically citizens at birth regardless of the nationalities of their parents. White Brazilians ( pt, brasileiros brancos ) refers to Brazilian citizens who are considered or self-identify as "white", typically because of European or Levantine descent. The main ancestry of current white Brazilians is Portuguese.
