Pont Du Diable, Hérault
The Pont du Diable on the river Hérault is one of many bridges in France with this name (it means Devil's bridge). It is located over a steep-sided gorge, about 4 km north-west of Aniane in the Hérault département. Constructed by Benedictine monks in the first half of the 11th century, it provided a link between the abbey at Aniane and the Gellone Abbey at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Though subsequently widened and raised several metres around 1770, it has retained its original shape. The Pont du Diable de Villemagne-l'Argentière is a romanesque bridge in Villemagne-l'Argentière, in the Hérault department in France. It crosses the river Mare. It is built at a slope due to the different levels of the banks of the Mare. History The bridge dates from the 13th century. It was built to allow the shipping of coal and lignite from Graissessac to the royal glassworks at Hérépian. Protection The bridge was protected as a historic monument on the 27 May 1936. Devil's Bridge is a term applied to dozens of ancient bridges, found primarily in Europe. Most of these bridges are stone or masonry arch bridges and represent a significant technological achievement in ancient architecture. Due to their unusual design, they were an object of fascination and stories in antiquity and medieval Europe. Each of the Devil's bridges typically has a corresponding Devil-related myth or folktale regarding its origin. These stories vary widely depending on the region and beliefs.
