Piteå Archipelago
The Piteå archipelago ( sv, Piteå skärgård or ''Pite skärgård'') is a group of Swedish islands in the north part of the Bay of Bothnia, at Piteå in the southeast of Norrbotten County. A few of the islands have small permanent populations, but most are used only for recreation in the summer months. They are icebound during the winter. Location The north of the bay of Bothnia contains a large archipelago area. The islands in the Swedish sector make up the Norrbotten archipelago. It is divided into the archipelagos of Piteå (550 islands), Luleå (1,312 islands), Kalix (792 islands) and Haparanda (652 islands). Due to post-glacial rebound the land is rising at from annually, so the shoreline can retreat by as much as in one person's lifetime. Bay Of Bothnia
The Bothnian Bay or Bay of Bothnia (; ) is the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia, which is in turn the northern part of the Baltic Sea. The land holding the bay is still rising after the weight of ice-age glaciers has been removed, and within 2,000 years the bay will be a large freshwater lake since its link to the south Kvarken is mostly less than deep. The bay today is fed by several large rivers, and is relatively unaffected by tides, so has low salinity. It freezes each year for up to six months. Compared to other parts of the Baltic it has little plant or animal life. Extent The bay is divided from the Bothnian Sea, the southern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, by the Northern Quark (Kvarken) strait. Pite-Rönnskär
Pite-Rönnskär is a Swedish island with lighthouse station located in the Bothnian Bay. The island is located at the border between the provinces of Västerbotten and Norrbotten but belongs to Skellefteå Municipality. The island was a well known fishing village for many years and contains a chapel dating from 1771. In 1821 a pilot station was located on the island. Today the fishing cabins on the island is used as summer residences. The island has a weather station, and wind observations from it is reported by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute in their shipping forecast. Lighthouse The first lighthouse on the island was lit in 1880. It was built on the gable of a keeper's house and carried a kerosene lamp. In 1905 the current lighthouse was constructed on the island. Kluntarna or ''Pite-Kluntarna'' is a Swedish island belonging to the Piteå archipelago in Norrbotten. Vargön, Piteå
Vargön is an island in the northwest of the Swedish sector of the Bay of Bothnia, in the Piteå archipelago. Location Vargön lies in the inner archipelago of Piteå. Since 1977 it has been designated a nature reserve. Camping is allowed, and visitors may fish and hunt, pick berries and mushrooms, make fires in designated areas and camp. An old fisherman's cottage may be used for overnight stays. In the winter, when the ice is at least thick, marked snowmobile trails are set from Svartnäsudden (Bredänget) out to Mellerstön, about , then to Vargön, about . The island is mainly covered with coniferous forests, but has open sandy areas. Pines grow near the shore and there are thinner old pine forests farther inland. The forests are rich in plant species.
