Panama At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Panama competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's sixteenth appearance at the Olympics since its debut in 1920. Panama did not compete on four occasions, including the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, because of its partial support of the United States boycott. Comité Olímpico de Panamá sent 8 athletes, 6 men and 2 women, to compete in 5 sports, tying its record with Montreal in 1976, and with Los Angeles in 1984. Two of their athletes competed at their second consecutive Olympics, including breaststroke swimmer Édgar Crespo. Irving Saladino
Irving Jahir Saladino Aranda (born January 23, 1983) is a Panamanian former long jumper. He was Olympic champion, having won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and is Panama's first and only Olympic gold medalist. He was world champion in the long jump in 2007. He represented his country at three straight Olympics, from 2004 to 2012, and competed at four World Championships in Athletics from 2005 to 2011. Amongst his honours are a silver medal from the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships and gold medals at the Pan American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, Central American Games, South American Games, the IAAF World Cup and the Ibero-American Championships in Athletics. Félix Gabriel Verdejo Sánchez (born May 19, 1993) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer who held the WBO Latino lightweight title from 2015 to 2017. As an amateur he represented Puerto Rico at the 2012 Olympics. In May 2021, Verdejo turned himself in to police to face federal charges in the murder of his pregnant mistress of many years. Brigitte Yagüe Enrique (born 15 March 1981 in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain) is a taekwondo practitioner from Spain. In 2004, Yagüe qualified for the Athens Olympics, winning over rival Belen Asensio in the –49 kg class at the Spanish Olympic Trials. There, she was eliminated in the first round of the women's 49kg competition by losing 5–9 to Yaowapa Boorapolchai of Thailand. The women's 49 kg competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 8 August, at the ExCeL London. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists competed in the repechage, another single-elimination competition. Each semifinal loser faced the last remaining repechage competitor from the opposite half of the bracket in a bronze medal match. Carolena Jean Carstens Salceda (born January 18, 1996 in Winfield, Illinois, United States) is a taekwondo practitioner representing Panama. She has dual US / Panamanian citizenship through her father and mother respectively,. She used to live in Glen Ellyn, Illinois., but has since moved to Spain. In 2011, Carstens participated at the Pan American Championships, where she won the silver medal in the youth -52 kg category, losing to the American Deireanne Morales in the final.
