Manayunk ( ) is a neighborhood in the section of Lower Northwest Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. Located adjacent to the neighborhoods of Roxborough and Wissahickon and also on the banks of the Schuylkill River, Manayunk contains the first canal begun in the United States (although not the first completed, due to budget problems). The area's name is derived from the language of the Lenape Indians (later called the Delaware Indians by Europeans). In 1686-dated papers between William Penn and the Lenape, the Lenape referred to the Schuylkill River as "Manaiung", their word for "river", which literally translates as "place to drink"; the word was later altered and adopted as the town's name. Although historically a working class community, in recent years the neighborhood has been substantially gentrified. USS Ajax (1869)
USS Ajax, originally named USS Manayunk after a town in Pennsylvania, was a single-turreted built for the Union Navy during the American Civil War. Completed after the end of the war, ''Ajax'' was Reserve fleet, laid up until 1871, although she received her new name in 1869. The ship was briefly activated in 1871, before a much longer Ship commissioning, commission began in 1874–1875. She was assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron during this time. ''Ajax'' was again placed in reserve in 1891. The ship was on state militia, militia duty when the Spanish–American War began and she was recommissioned in 1898, to defend Baltimore, Maryland, although she was decommissioned later in the year before the necessary refit could be completed. USS Manayunk (AN-81)
USS ''Manayunk'' (YN-100/AN-81) was a which was assigned to protect United States Navy ships and harbors during World War II with her anti-submarine nets. Her World War II career was short lived as the war was ending, and she was placed in reserve and eventually struck by the Navy. Construction and career The second ship to be so named by the Navy, ''Manayunk'' was laid down with the hull identification number YN-100 by the Commercial Iron Works, Portland, Oregon on 18 December 1944. The ship redesignated AN-81 on 17 January 1945 and launched on 30 March 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Bryan Wallace Strong. ''Manayunk'' was commissioned on 25 May 1945. World War II related service Following shakedown and training, ''Manayunk'' steamed for the central Pacific Ocean for duty with Minecraft, Pacific Fleet.
