Melodifestivalen (; literally "the Melody Festival") is an annual song competition organised by Swedish public broadcasters Sveriges Television (SVT) and Sveriges Radio (SR). It determines the country's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, and has been staged almost every year since 1959. Overview Early experiments (1958–1969) Following Sveriges Radio's internal selection of Alice Babs as Sweden's representative for Eurovision 1958, the first Melodifestival, incorporated into the ''Säg det med musik'' radio series, took place on 29 January 1959 at Cirkus in Stockholm with four "expert" juries deciding the winner. The competition was won by Siw Malmkvist performing "Augustin", but SR decided beforehand that the winning song—regardless of original performer—would be performed by Brita Borg at Eurovision. Sweden In The Eurovision Song Contest
Sweden has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 61 times since making its debut in 1958, missing only three contests since then (1964, 1970 and 1976). Since 1959, the Swedish entry has been chosen through an annual televised competition, known since 1967 as Melodifestivalen. At the contest, Sweden was one of the first five countries to adopt televoting. Sweden hosted the contest six times: three times in Stockholm (, , ), twice in Malmö (, ) and once in Gothenburg (). Elisabeth Andreassen
Elisabeth Gunilla Andreassen (; born 28 March 1958), also known as just Bettan, is a Norwegian-Swedish singer who has finished both first and second in the Eurovision Song Contest. Career Her talent was discovered in 1979 by Swedish musician and TV host Lasse Holm. She was produced by Bert Karlsson's label Mariann Grammofon AB. In 1980, she joined Lasse's group Chips. Chips participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 with the song "Dag efter dag" ("''Day After Day''"), and reached 8th place. Andreassen is active in many musical genres such as country, schlager, and musicals. (known as ''MGP Junior'' in 2002) was a Swedish televised song competition for children aged 8 to 15, organised by (SVT). The competing songs were primarily in Swedish and written by the participants themselves. History In 2002 and again from 2006 to 2009, it was used to select the entry to represent Sweden in Melodi Grand Prix Nordic, a song contest between Scandinavian countries. Siw Gunnel Margareta Malmkvist (born 31 December 1936) is a Swedish schlager singer and actress popular in Scandinavia and West Germany. Bert Gustav Tommy Körberg (; born 4 July 1948) is a Swedish singer, actor, and musician. English-speaking audiences know him best for his role as Anatoly/"The Russian" in the musical ''Chess''. "Lilla stjärna" (; literally "Little star") performed by Alice Babs was the entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 1958 held in Hilversum, the Netherlands. This was Sweden's first song in the contest, and the first time that the Swedish language was performed on the Eurovision stage. Sweden's first participation in the contest was the source of some controversy between the artist Alice Babs and the composer; the song was originally titled "Samma stjärnor lysa för oss två" ("The same stars shine for the two of us"), but neither Sveriges Radio nor Babs approved of the lyrics and commissioned journalist and lyricist (at the time an employee of the TV station) to rewrite the song as well as providing it with a new title: "Lilla stjärna" – this without the knowledge or approval of original composer Åke Gerhard. My Lisa Karolina Nilsson (born 13 August 1970) is a Swedish singer. She was discovered by the producer William (Billy) Butt and she is perhaps best known in Sweden for her 1992 hit, '' Himlen runt hörnet'', written by Mauro Scocco and Johan Ekelund. It was released in English in 1995, titled ''Ticket to Heaven''. She has released four subsequent albums, ''Till Morelia'' in 1995, ''Viva'' in 2000, ''Små rum'' in 2002 and ''Hotel Vermont 609'' in 2006, all in Swedish.
