Pomace ( ), or marc (; from French ''marc'' ), is the solid remains of grapes, olives, or other fruit after pressing for juice or oil. It contains the skins, pulp, seeds, and stems of the fruit. Grape pomace has traditionally been used to produce pomace brandy (such as grappa, orujo, törkölypálinka, zivania). Today, it is mostly used as fodder, as fertilizer, or for the extraction of bioactive compounds like polyphenols. History "Pomace" is derived from the Latin "pomum" (fruit and fruit tree). The English were the first to use the term "pomace" to refer to the byproduct of cider production. In the Middle Ages, pomace wine with a low alcohol content of three or four percent was widely available. This wine was made by adding water to pomace and then fermenting it. Marc's Stores is a discount drugstore-and- grocery chain, with stores in northern and central Ohio. It is owned by Clevelander Marc Glassman. Marc's has over 60 stores in the Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Columbus, and Dayton areas. History Bernie Shulman opened his first mega-discount drug store in Mayfield Heights, Ohio in 1969. In 1979 one of Shulman's managers, Marc Glassman, opened his own store, Marc's, on the west side of Cleveland in the Southland Shopping Center in Middleburg Heights. That first store was badly damaged in a fire in October 1980 that started in, and destroyed, the adjacent J.C. Penney department store. Marc's closed for several months, eventually reopening in a larger space at the same site. Following the success of the Middleburg Heights store, Glassman built additional Marc's stores. ''Marc'' is a British television series presented by T. Rex's lead singer Marc Bolan. It was produced in Manchester by Granada Television for the ITV network. A second series was planned but Bolan died before it could be produced. Produced by Muriel Young and directed by Nicholas Ferguson, it ran for six weekly episodes in the autumn of 1977, before its host died in a car crash on 16 September that year. A pop music show with a very limited budget and markedly low production values, it gave Bolan a chance to showcase punk bands such as Generation X, the Jam, Radio Stars and Eddie and the Hot Rods. T. Rex lip synced at least three songs each week, with Bolan's guitar never appearing to be plugged in, a mixture of new versions of their old hits, and fresh tracks, while the guests were slotted in between. Pomace spirit (or pomace brandy) is a liquor distilled from pomace that is left over from winemaking, after the grapes are pressed. It is called marc in both English and French, but " grappa" in Italian and "bagaço" in Portuguese. In Spanish it is called orujo. Alcohol derived from pomace is also used as the traditional base spirit of other liquors, such as some anise-flavored spirits. Unlike wine brandy, most pomace brandies are neither aged nor coloured. Production Pomace may be either fermented, semi-fermented, or unfermented.
