Barbados has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. It occupies an area of and has a population of about 287,000 (2019 estimate). Its capital and largest city is Bridgetown. Inhabited by Kalinago people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Amerindians, Spanish navigators took possession of Barbados in the late 15th century, claiming it for the Crown of Castile. It first appeared on a Spanish map in 1511. The Portuguese Empire claimed the island between 1532 and 1536, but abandoned it in 1620 with their only remnants being an introduction of wild boars for a good supply of meat whenever the island was visited. National Democratic Party (Barbados)
The National Democratic Party was a centrist political party in Barbados which had been founded in 1989 by four defecting Democratic Labour Party ministers of parliament, led by the former finance minister Richard Haynes. The Barbados National Party was a political party in Barbados. History The 1940 elections saw the Voters Association, an informal grouping of white politicians, win 19 of the 24 seats in the House of Assembly. The Alliance Party for Progress (APP) is a Christian and social democratic electoral alliance in Barbados. It was formed on the 30 December 2021 by the United Progressive Party (UPP) and the People's Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) to contest the 2022 Barbadian general election. The United Progressive Party is a political party in Barbados. The party was announced in February, 2017 to coincide with the May 2018 general election cycle. The lead Chairperson is the Attorney-at-Law and former Senator and Minister with the Barbados Labour Party, Ms. Lynette Eastmond. History The United Progressive Party was formed in 2017 and Lynette Eastmond was chosen to lead the new party after much media speculation concerning the political ambitions of Eastmond herself. Early in the party's history another former BLP member who turned independent parliamentary member, Dr. Maria Agard, crossed the floor to join the UPP. Agard subsequently dropped out of the party just prior to the election deciding to no longer contest the current election. In November, 2017 the party announced a manifesto outlining its party agenda for Barbados. Solutions Barbados (SB) is a minor political party in Barbados. It was first founded by structural engineer Grenville Phillips II on 1 July 2015, and contested the May 2018 Barbadian general election. On 12 November 2020 following the 2020 St George North by-election, Phillips announced that he would be leaving elective politics, making no mention whether the party would continue to operate.
