Universidad De San Carlos De Guatemala
The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC, ''University of San Carlos of Guatemala'') is the largest and oldest university of Guatemala; it is also the fourth founded in the Americas. Established in the Kingdom of Guatemala during the Spanish colony, it was the only university in Guatemala until 1954,In 1954 a coup led by the National Liberation Movement which was sponsored by the United Fruit Company and coordinated by CIA and State Department American operatives who had links with the US company triumphed . although it continues to hold distinction as the only public university in the entire country. International Investment Group (IIG) is an American financial institution that specializes in short-term trade finance and commercial finance with a focus on emerging markets. Through its affiliate ''IIG Capital'' it provides financing to small and medium-sized merchants, traders and processors with a need for supply chain financing. David Hu (胡大韦 ''Hu Dawei''), cofounder of IIG Capital, served as its chief investment officer (CIO). In April 2022, Hu was sentenced to 12 years in prison for running a Ponzi scheme, defrauding and scamming customers of more than $120 million. Alejandro Baltazar Maldonado Aguirre (born January 6, 1936) is a Guatemalan statesman who was the Acting President of Guatemala, following the Congress of Guatemala's acceptance of the resignation of President Otto Pérez Molina on September 3, 2015. He was elected as vice president by Congress on May 14, 2015, after his predecessor, Roxana Baldetti, resigned amid allegations of corruption. Before becoming vice president, he served as a constitutional judge, congressional deputy, ambassador to the United Nations, and political leader, including a failed presidential bid in 1982. Frank William La Rue
Frank La Rue (born 1952) is a Guatemalan labor and human rights law expert and served as UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, from August 2008 to August 2014. Along with American Human Rights attorneys, Anna Gallagher and Wallie Mason, Mr. La Rue is the founder of the Center for Legal Action for Human Rights (CALDH) and has been involved in the promotion of human rights for over 25 years. He was nominated for (but did not win) the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize by Mairead Corrigan, Northern Irish peace activist and 1976 laureate. Mr La Rue was previously the Executive Director of Robert F. Luigi Lanuza
Luigui Geovani Lanuza Estrada is a Guatemalan actor and producer. Early life Lanuza is the son of Rafael Launza, a pioneering director of Guatemalan cinema. He appeared in several movies in the 1970s including Superzan y el niño del Espacio (1972) and Terremoto en Guatemala (1976). He graduated in 1983 from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, becoming a doctor. He later moved to San Francisco, California and worked with the Hispanic community. While in San Francisco, he was the spokesperson of the city's Public Health Department on the TV channels Univision and Telemundo. Return to Guatemala Following his career as a doctor, he returned to Guatemala and became involved in the movie industry again. He produced Soy de Zacapa, a film inspired a popular Guatemalan song which was turned into a script by his father. The film debuted in 2011. His works are formal reading material in public schools and private schools in Guatemala. Luis González Palma (1957) is a Guatemalan photographer. Much of his work "has revolved around the strange hybrids of race and culture that add up to Latin America." Ignacio Gómez (born c. 1962; also known as "Nacho") is a Colombian journalist known for his high-risk reporting on organized crime, corruption, and paramilitary groups. In 2000, he received the "Special Award for Human Rights Journalism Under Threat" Amnesty Media Award. In 2002, he was awarded the International Press Freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists. Background Gómez began working at ''El Espectador'', a daily newspaper in Bogota, at the age of 24. The paper's editor-in-chief at the time was Guillermo Cano, who was a hero of Gómez. José Manuel Fortuny
José Manuel Fortuny Arana (22 May 1916 – 2005) was an important communist leader in Latin America. He became well known for his friendship with Guatemalan President Jacobo Árbenz, and was one of the main advisers in his government, which lasted from 1951–54. Árbenz was overthrown by a coup engineered by the United States in 1954, an event which drove Fortuny into exile, along with many of his comrades.
