KkStB Class 429
The steam locomotive class kkStB 429 was a class of passenger locomotive operated by the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways (''Kaiserlich-königliche österreichische Staatsbahnen''), kkStB. As Wilhelm Schmidt (engineer), Wilhelm Schmidt's superheater went into series production, Karl Gölsdorf modified the Class kkStB 329, 329 into the superheated variant 429. The smokebox was lengthened, the boiler barrel reduced accordingly, high-pressure cylinder (locomotive), cylinder was given piston valves, the low-pressure cylinder slide valves. The Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf, the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik and the Lokomotivfabrik der StEG delivered 57 units (429.01–429.57) to the kkStB. In spite of the small superheater area, problems arose with the slide valve on the low-pressure side. Lokomotivfabrik Der StEG
In 1839 the Lokomotivfabrik der StEG became the first Austrian locomotive works to be founded and it produced many influential locomotive designs. The factory was built in 1839 by the Vienna-Raab Railway between the Vienna Südbahnhof and Vienna Ostbahnhof and stocked with machinery, much of which was from England. The first locomotives and coaches were built in 1840 based on American prototypes. These were also the first railway vehicles to be built in Austria. The manufacture of railway vehicles was difficult because at that time in Austria there were still no iron foundries and none of the workers had the training for this type of work. One of the biggest influences on the development of locomotive construction in Austria was the first manager of the factory, John Haswell, who led it from 1840 to 1882. Steam Dome
The steam dome is a vessel fitted to the top of the boiler of a steam engine. It contains the opening to the main steam pipe and its purpose is to allow this opening to be kept well above the water level in the boiler. This arrangement acts as a simple steam separator and minimises the risk that water will be carried over to the cylinders where it might cause a hydraulic lock, also known as priming.
