Jim Benning
James Elmer Benning (born April 29, 1963) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. He formerly served as the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Drafted in the first round, sixth overall, in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, he played 610 games over nine seasons for the Maple Leafs and the Canucks, compiling 52 goals and 243 points. He was identified during his playing career as an offensive defenceman. Playing career Junior hockey Prior to his professional career, Benning played for the Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. Rogers Arena is a multi-purpose arena located at 800 Griffiths Way in the downtown area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Opened in 1995, the arena was known as General Motors Place (GM Place) from its opening until July 6, 2010, when General Motors Canada ended its naming rights sponsorship and a new agreement for those rights was reached with Rogers Communications. John William Bower (né Kiszkan; November 8, 1924 – December 26, 2017), nicknamed "The China Wall", was a Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender who won four Stanley Cups during his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. 1985–86 NHL Season
The 1985–86 NHL season was the 69th season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the league's Board of Governors introduce the Presidents' Trophy, which would go to the team with the best overall record in the NHL regular season. The Edmonton Oilers would be the first winners of this award. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Calgary Flames four games to one in the final series to win the Stanley Cup. League business On June 13, 1985, the NHL board of governors voted 17–4 in favour of amending a penalty rule. Previously, coincidental minor penalties would result in 4-on-4 play. Gary Nylund
Gary Nylund (born October 28, 1963) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played in 608 National Hockey League games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders. Overview Nylund was born in Surrey, British Columbia and raised in North Delta, British Columbia. He was selected third overall by Toronto in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Nylund is notable for being the first NHL player to change teams via free agency when he left the Maple Leafs to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1986. Following his retirement, Nylund became a firefighter in Delta, British Columbia. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. It is named after Bill Masterton, the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game. The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association after each team nominates one player in competition. The 36th National Hockey League All-Star Game was held in Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, home to the New Jersey Devils, on January 31, 1984. Uniforms The All-Star uniforms introduced in 1983 received an update for this game. The typeface for the diagonal "Wales" and "Campbell" conference names on the front of the jerseys changed from a plain block font to the style used by the New York Rangers. Trim stripes were added to the shoulder/sleeve panels and waistline - black on the white Wales jersey, and white on the orange Campbell jersey. This design would continue to be used through 1986. Börje Salming
Anders Börje Salming (; 17 April 1951 – 24 November 2022) was a Swedish ice hockey player. He was a defenceman who played professionally for 23 seasons, for the clubs Brynäs IF, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and AIK. He spent 16 seasons with the Maple Leafs, who retired his number 21 in 2016. Salming holds several Maple Leafs records, including the most assists. Salming also played extensively for Sweden in international competitions, winning two World Championship medals. Salming was one of the first European players to make an impact in the National Hockey League (NHL), for which he is often considered a trailblazer, being named to six consecutive NHL All-Star Teams. The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary Minor league#Ice hockey, developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). Fred Boimistruck
Frederick (Fred) Michael Boimistruck, Jr. (born January 14, 1962) is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenceman. He played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Boimistruck grew up in Capreol, Ontario. He played junior ice hockey for the Cornwall Royals, playing twice for the Memorial Cup. He was selected by the Maple Leafs in the 1980 NHL Draft, 43rd overall. He joined the Maple Leafs directly from junior, playing 57 games for Toronto, scoring two goals and eleven assists. The following season, Boimistruck played part of the season with Toronto, but mostly with their farm team in St. Catharines. After one further season at St. Catharines, Boimistruck tried playing in Europe, played some games for Fort Wayne and finished his playing career in 1985–86 with the Flint Spirits. Bob McGill
Robert Paul McGill (born April 27, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. McGill played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1981 until 1994. Early life McGill began playing hockey when he moved to Leduc with his family in 1970. He left Leduc to play for the BCJHL’s Abbotsford Flyers in 1978. McGill joined the WHL’s Victoria Cougars from 1979 to 1981, winning the WHL championship in 1981. 1982 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1982 Ice Hockey World Championships took place in Finland from the 15 April to the 29 April. The games were played in Helsinki and Tampere with eight teams playing a single round-robin, followed by the top four teams playing each other once more. This was the 48th World Championships, and also the 59th European Championships of ice hockey. The Soviet Union became World Champions for the 18th time, and also won their 21st European Championship. The tournament is notable since Canada, reinforced by Wayne Gretzky after the Edmonton Oilers were shockingly knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs by Los Angeles, would have won the silver medal if the Soviet team had beaten Czechoslovakia in the final game.
