Jammu
Jammu is the winter capital of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the headquarters and the largest city in Jammu district of the union territory. Lying on the banks of the river Tawi, the city of Jammu, with an area of , is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north and the northern-plains in the south. Jammu is the second most populous city of the union territory. Three battles have been fought in the city: first by the founder Raja Mal Dev against Timur in Battle of Jammu (1399), second by Sardar Bhag Singh against Mughal army in Battle of Jammu (1712) and the third by Mian Dido & Maharaja Gulab Singh against Ranjit Singh's army in Battle of Jammu (1808). Bahu Fort
The Bahu Fort is a historic fort in the city of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir. Constructed on the banks on Tawi River, the ancient fort is believed to have been constructed by Bahu Lochan - brother of the traditional founder of Jammu, Jambu Lochan. It is believed that the first renovation of this fort was undertaken during Dogra Rule in 18th century. The fort is a religious place, and within its precincts has a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. The temple is known locally as the "''Bawe Wali Mata temple''". Raja Jambu Lochan, when on a hunting trip, witnessed a curious scene of a tiger and a goat drinking water side by side at the same location in the Tawi River, without the tiger attacking. Tawi River
Tawi is a river that flows through the city of Jammu. The Tawi is a major left bank tributary of the river Chenab. Tawi river is considered sacred and holy, as is the case with most rivers in India. * The source of Tawi is the Kailash Kund Spring at Soej hills in Bhaderwah. * After flowing through the Chennani and Udhampur, Tawi passes through Jammu and joins the Chenab in Ranbir Singh Pora and then enters Pakistan. * Chennani hydro electric power project constructed on River Tawi has a capacity to generate 23 MW of power. Dogri
Dogri ( Name Dogra Akkhar: ; Devanagari: डोगरी; Nastaliq: ; ) is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, India, with smaller groups of speakers in adjoining regions of western Himachal Pradesh, northern Punjab, and north-eastern Pakistani Punjab. It is the ethnic language of the Dogras, and was spoken in the historical region of Greater Duggar. Currently in Districts : Kathua, Jaamu, Samba, Udhampur, and Reasi, it is a majority language. Dogri is a member of the Western Pahari group of languages. Unusually for an Indo-European language, Dogri is tonal, a trait it shares with other Western Pahari languages and Punjabi. It has several varieties, all with greater than 80% lexical similarity (within Jammu and Kashmir). Dogri is spoken by 2.6 million people in India (as of the 2011 census). Mubarak Mandi Palace
Mubarak Mandi is a palace in Jammu, India. The palace was the royal residence of the maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir from the Dogra dynasty. It was their main seat till 1925 when maharaja Hari Singh moved to the Hari Niwas Palace in the northern part of Jammu. The palace is located in the heart of the old walled city of Jammu and overlooks the Tawi river. History In medieval times, Raja Maldev founded Jammu after Tamerlane destroyed his city at Babor near Lake Mansar. He choose Mubarak Mandi as his residence. Successive generations built palaces and extended it to its zenith. The oldest building of the complex dates back to 1824. Battle Of Jammu (1399)
Battle of Jammu was a battle fought on 27 February 1399 near Satwari Plains in Jammu. The Timurid Empire defeated the Kingdom of Jammu. There is a brief account in the official Timurid biography, the ''Zafarnama'', commissioned by Timur's grandson. Traditional accounts in Jammu differ from this considerably. It was some zamindar or rai who was forcibly converted to Islam, and not the King of Jammu. That is why the Rakwal, Chandel and Chauhan Rajput dynasties did not hesitate to marry their daughters to Mal Dev's successor. Ganesh Dass records another tradition. Hari Niwas Palace
The Hari Niwas Palace is a palace in Jammu, India. It overlooks the Tawi river on one side and on the other side the Trikuta hills. History The palace was built for Sir Hari Singh, the last reigning Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir (1895 - 1961), in the early 20th century, as a separate extension of 'Amar Mahal' (built in 1890) so he could entertain his guests after 1925, rather than at the older Mubarak Mandi Palace. Here he spent the last days of his stay in Jammu & Kashmir, before moving to Bombay (now Mumbai). The building is an art-deco structure.
