Area Code 500
In telecommunication, a personal communications service is defined by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) as "a set of capabilities that allows some combination of personal mobility, terminal mobility, and service profile management". Personal communications services use a special non-geographic area code of the format ''5XX'' for assigning telephone numbers for service instances. The designation of the 5XX area code format was authorized by the United States Federal Communications Commission, and introduced into the North American Numbering Plan in 1995. United States In 1995, AT&T introduced a "follow-me" service under the brand name of ''AT&T True Connections'' using area code 500. It was designed to replace the '' AT&T EasyReach 700'' service. Other local exchange carriers and interexchange carriers introduced similar competitive services. AT&T True Connections service was not well received. Companies, hotels, and others with PBX equipment continu ...

Personal Numbering
Personal numbering is the name for the virtual telephone number service in the UK. Typically the national destination code used for this service is (0)70. The service provides a flexible virtual telephone number able to be routed to any other number, including international mobiles. For example, the UK number +44 70 0585 0070 might route to an Inmarsat satellite phone number, allowing the user to have a UK number while roaming globally. This service has however been reported as having "significant scamming activity" of various sorts as users can mistakenly assume they are calling a UK mobile telephone number that generally costs far less. :(For the telephone numbering plan context of 070 numbers see Telephone numbers in the United Kingdom). History In the United States, AT&T ran a trial in 1991 which led, in 1992, to the ''AT&T EasyReach 700'' service of follow me numbers, on area code 700. Early days After protracted lobbying of Oftel throughout 1992, FleXtel launched ...

Virtual Number
A virtual number, also known as direct inward dialing (DID) or access numbers, is a telephone number without a directly associated telephone line. Usually, these numbers are programmed to forward incoming calls to one of the pre-set telephone numbers, chosen by the client: fixed, mobile or VoIP. A virtual number can work like a gateway between traditional calls (PSTN) and VoIP. Subscribers to virtual numbers may use their existing phones, without the need to purchase additional hardware, i.e. use the numerous available software. A virtual private number is a telephone number that forwards incoming calls to any of a number of pre-set telephone numbers. These are also called a follow-me number, a virtual telephone number or (in the UK) Personal Number. Usually a virtual telephone number can be set to forward calls to different telephone numbers depending on the time of day and the day of the week using time of day routing; for example, between 9 and 5 on working days incoming ...
